About the song:

"I wanted to write a good old-fashioned antiwar song. Throughout history, from the obscenity of the so-called "Children's Crusade" to modern-day conflicts, the proponents of warfare have had a strange notion that something greater than all of us was somehow supportive of their views and intent, and that they were therefore justified in instigating violence. Well, the message of this song is simply this: if you're seriously thinking of killing or even hurting people, God's already left the room."

Lyrics

You muster your armies
It’s kill or die
The Lord’s in our corner
The old battle cry
Before you cry havoc
Let your damn missiles fly
You should know
That God ain’t on your side

You kill with your rifles
Bombs and grenades
Tally the corpses
Just another day
You map out destruction
Using hate as your guide
You should know
That God ain’t on your side

Mongrel politicians
You dogs of war
Snarling and whining
You keep wanting more
And always pretending
You’ve nothing to hide
You should know
That God ain’t on your side

You hide in your bunkers
When terror reigns
More blood on your hands
Than runs in your veins
There’s sin in your dogma
There’s sin in your eyes
You should know
That God ain’t on your side

The world knows you’re crazy
We’ve had our fill
You know it’s written
“Thou shall not kill”
That’s a commandment
You dismiss with your pride
You should know
That God ain’t on your side

[Inst.]

Children of darkness
Be children of light
Then you will see
That harmony is might
Beat swords into ploughshares
Now side by side
Make your peace
Then God will be on your side

[End]
